In this article, I’ll be answering the question, ‘How to promote my music?’ It’s a question that I often get asked. I receive countless PMs from ‘marketing guru’s’ asking me to buy their basic-as-hell courses also I ain’t no SEO king. Therefore, no advertising genius but I know wagwarn when you don’t have a penny in your pocket. Without further ado, let’s get into the first method of how you can promote and advertise your music on the cheap.
Using Instagram to market and promote your music
Now, I’m not saying you need to flex expensive cars or post a billion pics of your holiday to morocco. Social media can spread the word fast and if you’ve got a dope song with a fitting video or image, it can do wonders for your streams and popularity. ironically, many of the people who ask me “How do I advertise my music?” do so on Instagram. The best thing about this strategy is it requires minimal effort and it’s totally free. Just be consistent with your posts and your hard work will pay off.
Spotify Editorial playlists promote your music for FREE
Spotify’s’ algorithmic and editorial playlists can take an artist from 0 plays, 0 streams, 0 revenue and 0 hope to thousands, if not millions of streams if your music is good. It’s also free to get your music featured on Spotify’s own playlists. However, this also means they don’t HAVE to add your music to it.
- Just head over to Spotify for artists and claim your profile if you haven’t done so already. (If you currently aren’t on Spotify, apple music or Deezer yet, consider reading this article before you pay for DistroKid.
- Navigate to the ‘MUSIC’ tab and click on ‘Upcoming.’ Here, you can submit your track to Spotify editorial playlists.
Bonus tip for Spotify: User-created lists are also a great way to gain exposure, however, many creators charge when they have leverage. If you’d like to be featured in any of MY playlists, however, just DM me via the contact form or Instagram. (My playlists are below.)
